Calendar for IPMers

Hi Guy's,

First of all apologies for just going into a hibernation or "Veena-nation" for some time. I will try to be regular.
As you would see that there is a calendar which I have added to the Blog, what you need to do is to click at the bottom of the calendar and go to the respective month and day (try to make it forward looking, so if your birthday was 6th Nov, do not do the entry on 6th Nov 2008, but go to 6th Nov 2009) and do the entries. So please go ahead and add your details as you feel suitable to the other blogger of this group to view. This is just one of the ways your batch mates will remember/ come to know what special is coming in your way so that we can all wish you / your spouse / your kids/ partner the best for that day। Again this is voluntary and it is your call whether you want to enter this or not and what you would like to enter.

regards,
संजय

Micro waved water

Hi, it appears that all of us have become quite busy and have little to say to each other after the initial enthusiasm...Am therefore using this blog to post some useful/interesting info. as and and when it finds way into my inbox.
"Micro waved water"
A 26-year old guy decided to have a cup of coffee. He took a cup ofwater and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before).I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he told me he wantedto bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, heremoved the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that the waterwas not boiling, but instantly the water in the cup 'blew up' into hisface. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand but all thewater had flown out into his face due to the build up of energy. His wholeface is blistered and he has 1st and2nd degree burns to his face, which may leave scarring. He also mayhave lost partial sight in his left eye.

While at the hospital, the doctorwho was attending to him stated that this is fairly common occurrence andwater (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heatedin this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse theenergy such as: a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc. It is however a much safer choice to boil the water in a teakettle.

General Electric 's (GE) response:Thanks for contacting us. I will be happy to assist you. The e-mailthat you received is correct. Micro waved water and other liquids do notalways bubble when they reach the boiling point. They can actually getsuperheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out ofthe cup when it is moved or when something like a spoon or teabag is put intoit. To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat anyliquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup standin the microwave for thirty seconds before moving it or adding anything intoit.

Lehaman and after...

LATELY, I have been thinking a lot about the Lehman crisis. Spending money that they didn't have and going beyond their means is one of the main reasons for their situation today. In fact that is the cause for the current economic crisis in the US.

When I see all this happening, I can only remember the good old days. Then, karz was bad. People looked down upon those who took loans. Parents would not give their daughter's hand in marriage to a man with loans. But of course, the times have changed now. Everyone I know has a loan. The buzz word is EMI (equated monthly installment). Today, you can buy every thing on EMI - a house, a television, an i-Pod. In fact I know of some one who just bought a fancy BMW 3 series on EMI, instead of buying a cheaper car outright with cash. I mostly prefer to take public transport, but then I am an old man with old thoughts!

Anyway, coming back to what caused the crisis. Imagine having Rs 2 lakh in your bank account, no regular income, yet buying a house worth Rs 65 lakh, in the hope of selling it for a higher price. Even if the price of the house fell by just 5 per cent (that is Rs 3 lakh), you will go bankrupt. This is what Lehman Brothers did; with around USD 20 billion they went and bought assets worth over USD 600 billion. Isn't it suicidal and simply foolish?I am sure things would have been different, had I been the head of Lehman brothers. But who wants an old conservative man like me to head a complex financial institution.

But there are a few lessons that we can learn:
1.Live a balanced life and avoid overspending.
2. Don't buy things we don't need.
3. Don't buy Branded good's.
4. Don't buy excess Food, Clothes, Cosmetics, Footwear, electronics and Fashion accuracies just think before you buy.
Tip: World still has a lot of growth ahead and the future holds immense opportunities for us. Let us make the most of it and save and invest it wisely instead of wasting our precious little on things we don't need.
5. Try to balance life with work (No one is happy to work in their professions).
6. Don't stress out your self, after work try to do some extra activities like swimming, yoga, walking, running where you can divert your mind from stress.
A thumb rule: Health is more important than money.
7. Try to understand each other (Wife and Husband) in financial matter's and help each other.
Tip: As soon as you get your monthly salary, set aside a fixed amount, usually 35 per cent, for insurance, savings and investments. You can then spend the rest.
8. Not all loans are bad. Loans that are 'need based' (home loans, education loans) can always find a place in your finances against those that are largely 'want based' (Credit cards, personal loans, car loans).
9. Borrow only if repayment is financially comfortable. A thumb rule: Keep EMIs within 35 to 45 per cent of your monthly income.

In that respect, there is one American who I really respect – Warren Buffet. He has lived in the same ordinary house for over three decades, drives his own medium sized car and leads an extremely regular 'middle class' life. If that's all it takes for the richest person on earth to be happy, why do all of us need to take extra stress just so that we can get things which aren't even essential?

Just a little thought..

What would you do?....you make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice? At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: 'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection.. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?'The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.'

Then he told the following story:Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.

'Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still! behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!' Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!' Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball ... the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the he! ro for h is team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third! Shay, run to third!'As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!' Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.'

That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THIS STORY: We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messagesabout life choices, people hesitate. The crude , vulgar and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces. If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the 'appropriate' ones to receive this type of message. Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference. We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the 'natural order of things.'

So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a littl! e spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.

You now have two choices:

1. Delete

2.Forward

Share a smile...

An Arab was admitted in the Lilavati Hospital at Mumbai for a hearttransplant, but prior to the surgery the doctors needed to store his bloodin case the need arose. As he had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be foundlocally and the call went out to a number of countries.A Gujarati from Ahmedabad had a similar type of blood. The Gujaratiwillingly donated his blood for the Arab. After the surgery, the Arab sentthe Gujarati as appreciation a new Toyota Prado, diamonds, lapiz lazurijewellery, and a million US dollars.Once again the Arab had to go through corrective surgery. His doctortelephoned the Gujarati who was more than happy to donate his blood again. After the second surgery, the Arab sent the Gujarati a thank you card and ajar of Almond halwa sweets. The Gujarati was shocked to see that the Arab this time did not reciprocatethe Gujarati's kind gesture as he had anticipated. He phoned the Arab and asked him that this time also I thought that youwould give me expensive gifts ..... But you gave only a thank you card and ajar of Almond sweets. On this the Arab replied ' Bapu.....now I have Gujju blood in my veins!'

Harvard Business School

Yesterday I was invited to have lunch with the Distinguished Professors of Harvard Business School in the HBS faculty dining room. I took two leaders from my team – Principal and Managing Director.

Somehow, I have had close association with Harvard over the years – hired many from Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School and Harvard Medical School. I have also fired quite a few people from this institution in the past (for all the right reasons). Continue to have many in my group from HBS. Last week was invited for coffee at Harvard Club in Manhattan by a CEO friend (of a global company) who introduced me to another CEO. One of my very important mentors is from the HBS - Class of 58. Someone in their Blog entry mentioned about the book which mentioned about the importance of HBS - Class of 58.

Leaders from HBS want to form a close association with us as we focus on bringing business innovation in the industry. We agreed to work closely with HBS, they will lead publication of some of the business innovation, will be sending their selected higher education students to work in our team, etc. At the conclusion of the meeting, the faculty gave us a tour of HBS and it key archives. It was truely a privilege.

I am not sure everyone knows that our dear Sanjay also completed a leadership course at HBS in the recent past. I have also decided to signup for some advanced management education at HBS next year.

As I walked out of the meeting yesterday, I could not resist to take a picture of HBS main bldg (meeting place) on my cell phone which I share with you.
With Best Wishes,

Wine Making

One of our friends (colleague of my wife – Mamta) Dr. Alan Block has been making wine for last 35 years. We have admired Alan as one of the multi talented person – renovated his own house himself, put in a huge swimming pool himself, has one of the best gardens (flowers, fruits, veggies), among many other things.

Alan has been trying to convince me to make wine for last 2 years - gave me wine making book on Christmas, telling me stories whenever we meet on social events, etc. I will admit that I have aspired to move into wine making business when I get done with the Corporate world. Mamta wants to open Nursery - grow flowers and veggies – she will love if she can avoid selling any so she can admire them - all the time.

This year I started the wine making project. This week, Peter (our contractor) is putting up a Winery in the basement of our house. Alan and I decided to make white wine this season – he is making “Chardonnay” a dry wine while I am making “Riesling”. Riesling is a white grape variety which originates in the Rhine region of Germany. Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying flowery, almost perfumed, aromas as well as high acidity.

We got crushed grapes from Napa Valley in California last week. Last week was the start of the wine making season in US – lasts for about 2 weeks when you have to get the grapes crushed and the process started. There are specially places where you get all the supplies and equipment for making wine. When we went there over the weekend, it was full of people as many were undertaking some major wine making projects.

I hope this first batch of wine comes out well. I extend an open invitation to IPM ites – Class of 88 – you are all welcome for some wine at my place.

Words of Wisdom from a Great Indian

Recently a great Indian and great talent wrote these words that I thought of share with you.

"Change is the nature of life but challenge is the future of life. So challenge the changes. Never change the challenges."

"Motivation is all about how high you can bounce when you hit absolute rock bottom."

"If we wait for the waves to subside, we may never have a swim in the sea."

"No one can make us feel inferior, without our consent."

Black Monday

Dow fell 500 plus, Lehman Brothers having a fire sale (in Bankruptcy), Merrill Lynch got sold to Bank of America for peanuts over the weekend, Bear Stern (right in front my office) has banners with J P Morgan (went belle up few months back). These are/were the pillars of the financial stability in the global financial markets.

The feeling on Wall Street / New York was similar to what we had seen on 9/11, if not worse.

The world is not going to be the same as we have known it. The financial markets crashed and burned – and the saga continues.

They say – when Wall Street “Sneezes” – Rest of the world gets “Cold” – today what we saw was nothing close to Cold or any of its symptoms - much worse. People in panic, before 8 AM this morning had 41 resumes in my inbox/email. People loosing jobs as nobody’s business.

New York gets you High most of the time – but when it goes down – it really goes down – today I think was a "Low" to remember.

PHOTOGRAPHS!!!

Today Sangy and I were discussing about uploading the photographs of IPM. Unfortunatly our sets are with our parents . She is arranging to get them soon and will upload them for our benefit.
Meanwhile if anyone else can do it , it would be really nice.

By the way next weekend is going to be a mini reunion in Pune . Veena is coming for some official work and I am going to join her from Bombay. Sanjay and Sangy will be hosting dinner for us and may be we might just meet Devesh (i.e. if he is open to meet us ..). I have met Veena only thrice in the last 20yrs (last time was 10yrs back) and Devesh only once. So am looking forward to catching up ...

Great Job - Sanjay and Manju

Kudos to Sanjay and Manju (as well as Technology) to get the IPM’s Class of 88 together after 20 years – bees saal baad

Pride is an important ingredient in one life - It gives me great amount of pride to see all of us doing well and rocking after 2 decades – in different walks of life, different parts of the world, accomplishing new heights and still belonging to an alliance – a strong alliance that got formed – I would say to a great extent by the act of nature and here we are now talking about it.

When we were at Modipuram – a big question in our mind was – so what are we going to do when we leave IPM – what profession are we going to go into – lot of What’s – Great to see how the answer to that What continues to unfold in front of us and still holds us together with the alliance that was developed in IPM - Class of 88.

I look forward to hearing and sharing our experiences during our individual travels in the last 20 years from all of us.

With Best Wishes,

Vipul

Silver Jublee Reunion - IPM 88 batch (pl post ur comments here)

Silver Jublee Reunion - IPM 88 batch (pl post ur comments here)

Hi! I taking the liberty of copying (from the comments section of my earlier post) Sanjay's Post on the above "as a NEW post." I hope with this as a New post, some of us will not miss out reading it and reacting to it. Pl write your comments against this Post and not against the earlier one. This would help in archiving thoughts/reactions /actions etc. from the take off point..

SANJAY's EARLIER NOTE:

All right guys and gals, here is what I have gathered from the IPMBloggers on the Siler Jubilee celebrations. Please add, modify, suggest or delete your thoughts. I will make a mail and send it across to Asit Mohan with a copy to few of you.

a) We need to get together for the Silver Jubilee Celebrations which would fall around 2013 or 2011 (depending on whether we take the pass out year which was 1988 or the admission year which was 1986). Pradeep has suggested earlier, what do you guys say to that?? I will frame accordingly. Only when we have some timeframe we can take this forward. Please give in your thoughts to this.
b) IPM needs to arrange for our stay arrangements if it is going to be in Meerut / Ghaziabad, Delhi.
c) Wherever it is, cost of travel will be borne by the ex-student.
d) The meet could be for 2 days with detailed agenda to be followed.
e) Chappar and others would be on us and we need to find out how to do it, nothing to do with the Institute, I hate to explain Asit Mohan what "Chappar is" and why he should fund it....

Some other thoughts to ponder and give your feedback on.

a) What if the ex-student plans to get his family? Should the cost of stay be borne by him / her or can it be shared or let the Institute take this?
b) I am willing to talk and take the agenda forward with Asit Mohan and others at the Institute, I need folks close to our Institute like Avnish or others to coordinate the effort for arrangements if this goes though, do we have some volunteers willing to jump in. I can lead but need some executers as it would be difficult for me to coordinate this from here.
c) Once we have the core team in place I need to know who is willing to do what (depending on their bandwidth).
d) Can we have some suggestions on what funding can we generate on our own if the institute is willing to do partial funding for this Noble Idea?
e) What can we add to make this as a memorable event, maybe something which we can give back to the Institute, for them to remember the difference in what they have now versus what they had as the only memorable "Class of 88'?
f) What time of the year would be your preference? Garmi, Sardi or Baarsat. ?
g) Finally back to the basic question, when (which year) would we like to have this?

Any other thoughts?? Please let me know and I will work.

Birthdays!!!!

Let us request Sanjay (coz he is the administrator ) to post the original happy b'day messages for all us as and when applicable. All of us can then add to the comments to his original post.
We all can share the b'days with Sanjay so that he can devise an automatic reminder system for the adiministrator . Meanwhile ,we can also remind him one day in advance abt the birthday boy/girl . If there is going to be no automatic reminder system for Sanjay then whoever remembers can do the posting...

Some of us are aware about the next b'day in the offing . Keep blogging to check out!!!!

Hi

hi everyone

Nice to see everyone blogging . There are lots of memories to be shared and laughed at . " The boss" , "chappar" , "nucleation" are some words that are associated with our group. Hope we can get together like Manju has suggested for a siver jubilee. Three cheers for a great start.

Hello Everyone !! So here we r , some two decades younger !!! this is a real swell idea and we all can feel a bit closer to the "gen next" . thanks sanjay for this initiative!

i do have pradeep's id which i will pass on to sanjay . am sure pradeep, with his vast network of north based batchmates will make this blogging more vibrant.

i would like to invite your comments and initiative in having a "silver jublee reunion". If we can get IPM to take the initiave and start organising it for all the batches completing 25yrs , we can expect a fairly good programme for ourselves by the time our turn comes...

Stay connected!!

Slight change in the layout of our Blog

Thanks buddy for checking in. As you might have noticed I have changed the fonts of the blog as I feel it may get difficult for some older folks to read (you know eye sight problems!!)also a change is part of our life.

I would like to see each one contribute on their experience (if they remember, you know memory also keeps fading with the passage of time :) )what they thought of our good old days and what they feel now..

Just for the not so blogging savy, including myself........In case anyone wants to give a comment to the post, he / she can do by clicking on the "Comments" icon given at the end of the post. Additionally, if anyone wants to write a post he / she would first have to get in as a author, so let me know who wants to be an author and I will add him (I have already sent requests to the folks whose e-mail ID I had). Finally, if you want to view on what comments have been given by others on a particular posting, please click the revelant posting heading from the left side (just below the Month stamp). Thanks.

Cheers...

IPMites of '88

Sanjay it's a damm good idea! If nothing else it will help us catch the latest in technology...err ...blogging.

Your thoughts took me to good old times,Nucleation and how we collected funds by selling ads in the souvinier(i am still stuck to that profession, now selling space for a newspaper!!) and after the hard days work (it included teaching Veena how to drive a two wheeler-my avanti garelli) the well deserved rest was 'Chappar'. It was Rajeev Goyal(RG) who introduced us to a quarter of some concoction(tel ki shishi) and a quarter was sufficient to make all the big time guys quite 'happy' with the results. Sudhir was the only possible exception, he was for whatever reason always high! :-))

Cheers!

PS:Will pass on the news to Atul and Sudhir, lets see how many come in?

Hi Gals and Guys, (More practically Mom's and Dad's)

With Technological advances taking place around us and we all being part of couple of generations back, I thought of getting all of us to the new world of Blogging. This has been specifically created by me for all of us who were part of the 1988 gang. I will include Devil (Devesh) even though he passed out a year earlier than us.

Why am I doing this? Well just to stay connected to friends, some whom we knew closely some whom we wanted to know, some who wanted to know us and some who thought they knew us. Just wanted to re-collect memories the Chappar trips, the drinking spree wherein we used to drink "daru" from "tel ki bottle", the good times we had including the "ragging you folks got" to "Nucleation" etc. etc. I also want folks to post photos if they have any...

Bottom line, this is a way for us to connect. Are you all game? Forward this blog to all the guys who were with us during the 1988 Class including "Chowmein", Sudhir Arya and anyone else with whom you are still connected to. If it works, fine it it does not will call it off.

My plan is to look forward for the great time we had including the "non stoppable Laughter's" of Sangeeta (they still are), the "Bees Saal Baad" from Manju, the "Great Effort, you guys are superb" commets from Veena (so typical of the HR folks!!), the "kya scene hai" from Avnish or "the laughter which made the whole row of the movie hall move" from Vipul (sorry VIP), the "Lal Badshah" Devil with his Red Bike and finally me the only sober good cool, quite guy sitting in one corner of the class, just trying to learn what was being taught by the teacher with you all disturbing me!!.

Cheers!!! Let's get Blogging.................Please give your comments including what would you like to see as changes.
regards,

sanjay

p.s. With every day passing we are losing one day of our lifespan .....(senti talk na!!)
